In this special episode of Unpacking Live, Joe and I dove deep into a subject that hits close to home for many of us — fathers, daddies, and the many ways those roles show up in our lives. We recorded this just before Father’s Day, during Pride Month, and the timing felt powerful.
We talked about the dads who raised us, the chosen father figures who shaped us, and even the “TV dads” who stirred something in us growing up (yes, we absolutely unpacked some 80s and 90s nostalgia — and thirst). Joe shared a beautiful memory of a day with his grandfather in New York City, and I opened up about my own father’s quiet sacrifices growing up. We also reflected on what it means to be a caregiver, a protector, or — in some circles — a “daddy.”
But the episode didn’t shy away from the complicated parts, either.

Toward the end, I got emotional. And political. I talked about what it’s like watching current events unfold in the U.S. — especially in California — as a gay immigrant who grew up in a dictatorship. I didn’t plan to go there, but I felt like I had to. Pride isn’t just parties and glitter. It’s about showing up, being visible, and standing up for each other — especially when things feel scary.
Whether you have a great relationship with your dad, are grieving someone who raised you, or proudly wear the "daddy" title in your own way — this one’s for you.
